FYI - In our class I often use the "brain break" technique/strategy. Brain Breaks for kids is the simple technique in which young students are given a short mental break taken at regular intervals. Benefits of using brain breaks include helping kids to be calmer, remain focused while also stimulating physical activity.
A little bit of our "brain breaks" for you:

Jolly Phonics – we sang our group 1 jolly phonics songs. The letters we have learned so far are: S, A, T, I, P and N. Please feel free to hear the songs with your child:  https://youtu.be/1he7WQ0N-_M Support from home makes a huge difference! This week we started group 2. Here are the songs for C and K: https://youtu.be/0s1SOVyZbzQ

For the JK Language curriculum we use a combination of Jolly Phonics and Daily Five activities. With a priority of developing fine motor skills. Jolly Phonics teaches children to read and write using *synthetic phonics, which is widely recognised as the most effective way to teach children to read and write in English. The Daily Five is a series of literacy tasks which students complete daily. In our class, because of how our schedule works, we are not able to complete all the 5 tasks daily. But students have plenty of exposure throughout the week to the following: read to self, read to someone, work on writing, listen to reading and word work (the word work will be more evident in term 3).
*Synthetic Phonics is a way of teaching reading. Children are taught to read letters or groups of letters by saying the sound(s) they represent – so, they are taught that the letter l sounds like llllll when we say it. Children can then start to read words by blending (synthesising) the sounds together to make a word.
Recess and lunch
Language/Arts – we put on our detective hats and dabbed all the Cs and Ks on our paper.
Music Class - please visit Mr. Flower's blog:

Math – today we completed some Halloween numeracy activities. Students used little spiders to count and then they dabbed the correct number.

FYI - if you are wondering why your child is not bringing any (completed in class) work home here is why...
At SJA we collect students work throughout the term. The teacher will assist students to choose 1-2 work samples to add to their IB portfolio. The IB portfolio is a collection of "My Best Work", "Something I worked my hardest on", "Something I need to improve" and "A way I showed a learner profile". The IB portfolio will remain at the school and be passed on to the next grade level teacher. At the end of your child's school life at SJA, he/she will have a great collection of all their work.
Any work not selected will be sent home along with the report card, which will take place November 30th. Please let me know if you have any questions, it might sound complicated, but it is quite simple. :)
